How the calculation works
- Approved amount: your business miles in the tax year multiplied by the approved rate. A car driven 12,000 miles in 2026/27 is 10,000 × 55p + 2,000 × 25p = £6,000.00.
- Employer paid less: you can claim Mileage Allowance Relief on the difference. At 40p a mile over 8,000 miles in 2026/27 that is £4,400.00 − £3,200.00 = £1,200.00.
- Employer paid more: the amount above the approved figure is taxable.
