UK VAT rates
- 20% standard: most goods and services.
- 5% reduced: some goods and services, for example children's car seats and home energy.
- 0% zero-rated: zero-rated goods and services, for example most food and children's clothes.
Some things are exempt from VAT, such as postage stamps, financial and property transactions. Exempt items are not covered by a rate, so this calculator does not apply to them.
Adding VAT: net amount × 1.2 at 20%, × 1.05 at 5%. Removing VAT: gross amount ÷ 1.2 at 20%, ÷ 1.05 at 5%. VAT is rounded half-up to the nearest penny, and the net and VAT always add up to the gross.
If you are on the flat rate scheme, use the VAT Flat Rate Scheme calculator. To put VAT on an invoice, try the VAT invoice template.
