Xero guide

Import a Bank Statement CSV into Xero (Australia)

How to prepare and import a bank statement CSV into Xero: the Date and Amount columns, how positive and negative amounts work, and what to check first.

Source: Xero Central: Import a CSV bank statement. Last checked 13 October 2026.

Required columns

Xero needs a Date column and an Amount column for each transaction. Other columns, such as a description or reference, are optional.

Amount sign rules

Use a single Amount column. Money received is a positive number and money spent is a negative number. If your file has separate money in and money out columns, combine them into one signed column first.

Steps in Xero

  1. Check the CSV has a Date and an Amount column, with one header row and no blank rows.
  2. In Xero, open the bank account you want to import into and choose the option to import a statement.
  3. Upload the CSV and match each of your columns to the Xero field it belongs to.
  4. Review the preview, then complete the import and reconcile as usual.

What Accounter does and does not do

Accounter can convert a bank statement PDF into a CSV you review before importing. It is not a direct Xero integration. Any tax figures are estimates only; Accounter does not lodge BAS and does not run STP.
