Free UK VAT invoice template

A UK VAT invoice must include a sequential number, the tax point, your VAT registration number, the customer's name and address, the quantity, unit price, VAT rate and amount for each item, any cash discount rate, and the VAT total in pounds sterling. Fill in the template, watch the preview update, then download it with a free account.

Must be unique. Change it if you use your own series.

GOV.UK: unless you agree a date, the customer must pay within 30 days.

Display only: it does not change the totals. Leave blank if none.

What a UK VAT invoice must show

VAT Notice 700, section 16.3.1: you must show these details on any VAT invoice you issue.

  • A sequential number, based on one or more series, which uniquely identifies the document
  • The time of the supply (tax point)
  • The date of issue of the document (where different to the time of supply)
  • Your name, address and VAT registration number (the name and address you are registered under for VAT must appear)
  • The name and address of the person to whom the goods or services are supplied
  • A description sufficient to identify the goods or services supplied
  • For each description, the quantity of the goods or the extent of the services, the rate of VAT and the amount payable excluding VAT
  • The gross total amount payable, excluding VAT
  • The rate of any cash discount offered
  • The total amount of VAT chargeable, expressed in sterling
  • The unit price

Zero-rated and exempt items on a VAT invoice must clearly show that no VAT is payable, with a separate total for their value. This template does that for items you set to 0%. For orders of £250 or less, with the customer's agreement, Notice 700 also allows a simplified VAT invoice; this template produces the full invoice, which is always acceptable.

Not VAT registered? Use the invoice template. Thinking of the flat rate scheme? Try the VAT Flat Rate Scheme calculator.
