What a UK receipt should show

GOV.UK says an invoice is not the same as a receipt, which is an acknowledgement of payment. This is not a legal checklist: these are the details customers and accountants usually expect on one.

  • Who paid
  • Who received the payment
  • The date of payment
  • What the payment was for
  • The amount paid
  • How it was paid
  • A receipt number

Need to ask for payment first? Use the invoice template or, if you and your customer are both VAT registered, the VAT invoice template.
